Chapter Twenty

Above us sounded more thudding of feet. There was no yelling this time, and there was no way to tell if they were moving from us, or pursuing us with vengeful fury. As deep as we were, we all fell quiet.

Vampire hearing is incredibly acute. Particularly a healthy vampire who feeds regularly. Yet I didn’t know how good a dhampyr’s hearing was. I’d have put a bet, even with this stone between us and it, that a vampire’s senses would be alive to us. But there was no way to tell whether these creatures were onto us, or coincidentally walking over our heads.

It must have been three minutes before we spoke again. We let the silence sink into us and settle. The tension was dented by Minako humming some tune I didn’t recognise, but when it came to talking, it was actually Ludo who broke the purdah.

“Is there anything you want to tell us, Minako? Any story you’d care to relate? This would seem the perfect opportunity.”

When she responded, Minako’s voice was only a little louder than a breath. “Those people – those creatures – they’ve been chasing François. They latched onto his scent a few weeks ago, and haven’t let him go since. He doesn’t know what he’s done to earn their exclusive attention, beyond being the oldest and most venerable vampire they’ve encountered in their miserable lives.”

“And your ex-boyfriend.” Ludo’s eyebrow rose in the darkness.

She snorted; dismissing him. “In circumstances such as this, François normally tries to flee the country. Or kill the hunters. They’re too close behind him for him to make safe arrangements to flee by barge. While if he tries to confront them at night, the fact they’re dhampyrs would make it a testing battle. Some dhampyrs are born stronger than others. Occasionally, they are almost as strong as actual vampires. It could be he wouldn’t survive it at all. Besides which, he’s not in the best condition.”

“Remind me,” I whispered. “Dhampyrs are the children of pregnant women who’ve received a vampire’s kiss, aren’t they?”

“Or, the children women who have made love to vampires have conceived.”

Ludo and I glanced at each other.

“I didn’t think vampires could make love,” I said.

She rolled her eyes. “I’ve done the same training you have, so you know there are different bloodlines of vampires. There are varying breeds. Asian vampires are very different to African vampires which are different again to Eastern European vampires. There are vampires which have risen solely in America. They all have uncommon abilities, and you know this. Use your imaginations, guys. François is of an old line and so has an aversion to the cross, but there are others who would crumple such religious symbols in their hands.”

The feet stomped above us, and this time we heard cries of pain with it. Helena hadn’t been badly injured, so I could only guess it was the two of them carrying Davey. They weren’t worried about being gentle.

I saw a wince from Minako. She leant against the wall.
